Kindred Spirit é um espaço expositivo, concebido, fundado e dirigido por Sérgio Fazenda Rodrigues, que assenta na lógica de uma acção colaborativa, sem fins lucrativos. Sediado em Lisboa, mas procurando uma abrangência nacional e internacional, a sua actuação baseia-se na criação e no debate de conteúdos, apoiados na combinação de um plano curatorial, editorial e educacional. O seu propósito consiste no incremento da criação artística contemporânea e na sua aproximação a vários públicos para, de modo inclusivo, procurar modelos de trabalho que promovam a concepção, a discussão e a reflexão crítica das artes visuais.
In the Present Now, é um ciclo de exposições desenvolvido para 2023 e 2024, que tem por base uma reflexão apoiada no livro de Ítalo Calvino Seis Propostas para o Próximo Milénio (1998). Contrariamente ao expectável, sem ilustrar ou rebater as ideias e as aspirações de Calvino, este ciclo foca-se em debater outras formas de pensamento que, também em seis momentos, problematizam, indagam e reflectem a actualidade. O presente assente num estado de permanente mudança, pedindo um olhar volátil que não se fixa. Diluindo a lógica cartesiana, as exposições operam na ligação do indivíduo ao mundo, cruzando o passado e o futuro para problematizar o tempo presente. Não pretendendo extrair conclusões, senão oscultar abordagens a uma existência em movimento, as propostas expositivas têm o contrário como complemento e a incerteza como evolução. As exposições concebem-se em registo colaborativo, promovendo o desenvolvimento maioritário de obras inéditas, alicerçadas num diálogo entre artistas, curadores e espaços expositivos. Cada exposição é acompanhada por um catálogo bilingue, em que se aprofunda e documenta o trabalho produzido, apresentado também, pontualmente, fora de Portugal. Em 2023/24 estão previstas três exposições: - Rizoma / Rhizome explora a formulação do conhecimento, cruzando diferentes origens e saberes. Nesta exposição problematizam-se acções que agregam, horizontalizam e desconstroem uma hierarquia do saber. - Oxímoro / Oxymoron pesquisa a referência do lugar, questionando as ideias de espaço e existência. Acolhendo o paradoxo, esta exposição indaga a clareza e cruza as noções de fábula, reflexo e inversão. - Palíndromo / Palindrome, especula sobre a expressão do acontecimento. Atenta à elasticidade do processo criativo e à percepção do observador, a exposição indaga a duração e da linearidade do tempo. Num todo, a primeira exposição debate a natureza do conhecimento, a segunda o lugar do acontecimento e a terceira, o decurso da acção.
Hosts reporta-se ao acolhimento de intervenções pontuais, assentes numa parceria que abarca a orientação curatorial, a cedência de espaço e a divulgação de actividades. Estes eventos não integram o ciclo de exposições In the Present Now, mas incorporam o programa que o Kindred Spirit anualmente apresenta. Não se limitando à esfera das Artes Visuais, estas acções surgem de um convite que é directamente dirigido a cada artista ou criador, podendo abarcar a performance, a música e outros campos de acção cultural.
Kindred Spirit is an exhibition space, conceived, established, and directed by Sérgio Fazenda Rodrigues, founded on a logic of nonprofit collaborative action. Located in Lisbon but pursuing national and international reach, its activities are built on the creation and debating of content, supported by a combination of curatorial, editorial, and educational plans. Its resolve is to enhance contemporary artistic creation and to bring it closer to various audiences, inclusively seeking working models that promote the conception, discussion, and critical thinking of the visual arts.
In the Present Now is a cycle of exhibitions fostered for 2023 and 2024, grounded on a reflection held by Ítalo Calvino's book "Six Memos for the Next Millennium" (1998). Contrary to expectations, and without illustrating or refuting Calvino's ideas and aspirations, this cycle focuses on discussing other forms of thought that, also within six moments, problematize, query, and reflect on the current moment. The present has its foundations on a state of permanent change, demanding an unstill and volatile gaze. Thinning Cartesian logic, the exhibitions function in connecting the individual to the world, and intersecting past and future to problematize the present. Not intending to extract conclusions, but rather to heed approaches on a moving existence, these proposed exhibitions have opposition as a complement and uncertainty as an evolution. The exhibitions are conceived in a collaborative manner, majorly promoting the development of unpublished works based on a dialogue between artists, curators, and exhibition spaces. Each exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalog which deepens and documents the resulting creations, presented occasionally outside of Portugal. Through 2023/24, three exhibitions are proposed: - Rizoma / Rhizome explores the formulation of knowledge, intersecting different origins and comprehensions. In this exhibition, actions that aggregate, horizontalize, and deconstruct a hierarchy of erudition, are problematized. - Oxímoro / Oxymoron researches the reference of a place, questioning ideas of space and existence. Embracing paradox, this exhibition queries clarity, and traverse notions of fable, thought, and inversion. - Palíndromo / Palindrome speculates on the expression of an event. Attentive to the elasticity of the creative process and the observer's perception, the exhibition questions the duration and linearity of time. Overall, the first exhibition debates the nature of knowledge, the second the place of the event, and the third, the course of action.
Hosts refers to the hosting of punctual interventions, built on a partnership that comprises curatorial guidance, space provision, and activity promotion. These events are not part of the "In the Present Now" exhibition cycle but are included in the program that Kindred Spirit presents annually. Not confined to the sphere of the Visual Arts, these actions arise from an invitation directly addressed to an artist or creator, encompassing the possibility of performance, music, and other fields of cultural deed.
