Reaching for fata morgana II: Concert of fire
Reaching for fata morgana II: Concert of fire is a performance by Inês Mendes Leal that involves the handling of a pyrephone built by the artist. A pyrephone—also known as a fire organ or explosion organ—is a musical instrument devised in 1870 by the French physicist and musician Georges Kastner. Its sound comes from the movement and combustion of flames, here produced by activating butane gas (pyros) inside glass tubes.
The domesticated fire within the tubes is expressed through the collision of air, which arises at different temperatures. Sound is generated by the continuous consumption and renewal of air, which the artist controls like a musical instrument.
With no vacuum on Earth, all the warm air is replaced by something else. This flow is what activates the instrument.

Bio
Inês Mendes Leal (b. 1997) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Lisbon. Her artistic practice centres on the effect that air has on things, exploring ways of recreating a dynamic that is, in essence, external within the interior of an exhibition space.
This action is not limited to the idea of movement; it extends further into the search for a possible image of what, by nature, does not hold an image.
All of her practice is shaped by an attraction to emptiness — or by a desire to immerse herself in what is not directly offered: a wish to reveal, to feel, and to integrate the invisible into the visible.

Reaching for fata morgana II: Concert of fire
